I am still struck by the number of people in my life who, despite having their shit objectively together before the pandemic, have surrendered their power, logic, and common sense to fear. The fear energy has manifested itself in a million different ways, from people barricading themselves in their attic to intentional destruction in the name of “justice” to a raid on the country’s Capitol. None of this is motivated by love, compassion, or true progress. It is all fear, the same fear that’s driven humans to destroy each other and the planet for thousands of years. None of this is new. The only difference now is the speed at which the fear spreads.
The events of this coming week are going to provide you with a choice. You can either feed into the fear or you can choose to be above it. To be above that fear is to consciously stop feeding the part of you that is addicted to disaster porn and to do something else instead. Go for a walk. Bake some bread. Do your job. To feed into the fear is to leave the news on all day, keep your eyes glued on Twitter, to remain “plugged in” well past your ability to handle what you are watching.
Note that last phrase, because it is key.
Everyone has a different threshold for what they can handle right now. The moment the act of gathering information crosses the line from intellectual understanding to emotional investment (i.e. fear), you are past your point of tolerance. And it is damn easy to cross that line without realizing it. All the media’s colorful graphics, talking heads, and endless scrolling sucks us in so quick, we are drenched in despair before we can take a breath.
But no one is going to come rescue you from the hole of desperation you dig for yourself. So when you wake up tomorrow, on January 20, 2021, I encourage you to think about how you want to spend your day. Do you want to invite more fear into your home, even though you can control any of the events? Do you want to give away a day you can never get back to the negative energy of others? Or could you choose to spend that day finding pockets of joy, knowing that you are in charge of creating your own reality?
